"I went to school in a teeny, tiny farm town with one gas station and a grocery store that were combined. They also had a "penny candy" counter and a deli and the only coke machine for many miles. My grandmother worked there on some days as the clerk, gas attendent, deli counter server, and manager, all in one. When she was working there, some days I would be allowed to walk over after school (it was right across the street and you can bet there was never any traffic but the school buses) and help with the store. I went to that school only for first grade and second grade. I felt like a really "big" girl when I was allowed to get penny candy for people, I could count really good. At the end of the day when my grandma was done and would take me home, she would ask what I wanted for pay . . . and I always chose the Bonomo Turkish Taffy. I don't know why she always would ask me . . . she knew what I wanted!
