Retro Candy Memories – Squirrel Nut Zippers
"I remember being a kid along with my sister, brother and cousins waiting for my Grandfather to come home from work because on my Grandfather's payday he would fill his pockets with money and all of the grand kids was allowed to take and keep all the money we could hold on to and than go to store and buy our favorite candies gummy fish, pixie sticks, Mary Jane's, waxed nose, lip and mustache candy, squirrel nut zippers, six-lets, Peanut Butter Logs, candy necklaces, buttons, waxed bottles with juice inside and lemon heads. We had our very own candy land going on once a week those were truly the good old days." - Pamela F., Asbury Park, NJ
Mike N., of Grandville, MI reminisces:"Remembering back to my childhood there was one candy that everytime my parents gave us the customary 3 cents (this was back in 1959) for doing our chores we would go down to the corner drug store and I would get the ever tasty candies known as Squirrel Nut Zippers. They were a semi-soft nugget with chopped nuts--oh they made your mouth water they were so good."
