Candy Memories
Nakia G., of Hamden, CT reminisces: "I remember being a sugar addict as a kid. I would go to the store and buy all kinds of candy, that you don't see around now, boston baked beans, lemon heads and charleston chews. Oh how I miss being a kid and taking bottles to the store to get change to buy my goodies."
Jenalee T., of Centralia, IL remembers: "I always loved the colored sugar dots on the rolled up paper. (Almost looked like cash register roll paper.) It was like so many rows for a penny when I was very young. It really didn't have much flavor but really seemed like you were getting a bunch of candy!!!!"
Rochelle B., of Agoura Hills, CA reminisces: "I remember chipping in with friends for Bonomo Turkish Taffy when I was a kid (long, long time ago). We were all pretty poor in my neighborhood, so we would always chip in for candies, milkshakes etc. When we got the Bonomo, we would strike it against the sidewalk or another hard surface, to break it up into several sharable pieces. I can still taste it."
Dale S. of Bend, OR writes: "As a small child in the fifties I remember walking down a dirt alley barefoot, trying not to step on stickers, to the small corner store my nickel allowance in hand. Once inside there was a whole aisle of penny candies to choose from. There were candy cigarettes made from either hard candy or chocolate,Mary Janes, root beer barrels,Necco wafers, Abba Zabbas, Hersey bars(big),Tootsies Rolls,Dark babies, bubblegum and my favorite, candy lipstick. I would return home with a little brown bag full of candy! I sure miss that corner store."
Gwen B. of Louisville, KY remembers: "Since I was born in the 50's, I recall going to the corner at least once a week to buy candy for my brothers, sisters & myself. We all liked Mary Jane candy, Jolly Ranchers, candy cigarettes & the Chick-O-Sticks which I still like & buy today. Of course, the price for these candies are much higher today than during the 50's."
Jackie V. of Huntington Park, CA wrote: "I remember when I was a child I used to always try to save money which were coins, and I would wait til I had enough to buy candy from the corner store. I loved getting the pixie sticks, taffy, and all the "Willy Wonka" candies. I even got a lot of cavities due to the candy."
Marilyn C. of Livonia, MI wrote: "I remember going to our local deli where they had penny candy behind the glass counter. My mom would give me some coin money and I would love looking through the glass and picking out the candy I wanted. It was put in a small paper bag, I felt like I was a millionaire! :)"
Marsha P. of Franklin, KY wrote: "OMG, I have a treasure trove of memories. My favorite one was the candy necklace and those little parafin bottles of drink, and the little beads of candy on strips, and we can't forget the CANDY CIGARETTES!!!!!!!! Oh, and one more, TURKISH TAFFY!!!!!"
Ani R. of Bloomfield Twp., MI remembers: "The corner candy store is a sweet memory indeed. I got thinking about that the other day when I came across a piece of penny bubble gum. It brought back candy memories of the good old days."
"I remember going to the little grocery store where Mr. Gun would dote on kids & allow us to take our time deciding which penny candy to buy. Today, kids don't have a little grocery store to patronize amd wouldn't be able to ride their bikes alone there. Penny candy is another thing that is in the distant past!" - Barb B., Indianapolis, IN
"I used to love those dots on the paper candy. I'm sure I got my fair share of fiber eating those with the little bit of paper that got stuck to the back of the candy! :)" - Christina S., Anderson, IN
