Retro Candy Memories
Kari G. of North Mankato, MN remembers: "I used to go into a store called Grandma's V, it was a penny store just down the street from where I grew up and they had all kinds of penny candy that was awesome! I mean you could get 100 pieces of all different kinds, pick and choose right there and throw it in a bag and pay with change! tootsies, suckers, those cherry coins, smarties, hard candies...I can't even remember all of them but they were good and even better for a penny!!! hahha"
Dana R. of Spokane, WA remembers: "Once I started thinking about it, I realized that a LOT of my more cherished childhood memories involve candy of some sort! I remember walking to the corner store to buy banana taffy. The store seemed HUGE to me, but for just a few cents, I could leave with a bag FULL of candy! My brother and sister and I always tried to see who could make it last the longest, but none of it ever lasted more than a day. I remember getting Smarties as a treat every day in pre-school as I was leaving and heading for home. I used to scrape my teeth over each one, trying to make it last as long as I could. My parents were rather frugal, so they would buy Milky Way candy bars when they were on sale 8 for a dollar. Then, they would cut the candy bar into 5 identical pieces and that was our treat. I remember thinking that when I grew up, the first thing I was going to do was eat an entire candy bar myself!! Other favorites were the Ferrara Pan boxes of jawbreakers and boston baked beans. Every summer, during our family road trip, we would look for those candies at every stop. The boxes filled up the garbage can in our car! One of the funniest memories I have is when my aunt got us an entire CASE of Bubble Yum bubble gum. We thought we had died and gone to heaven. Grandpa was driving the camper, and we kids (cousins were along for the ride, too) were in the back, up top, over the cab on the bed, looking out at the road. We competed to see which kid could shove the most gum into his/her mouth. Then we had a bubble blowing contest. The bubbles burst and got all over the comforter, the glass in the camper, our hair, etc. We were in TROUBLE, but there wasn't much our parents could do since they saw how much fun we were having."
"My childhood summers were spent at the ballpark while my older brother played Little League. My mom would give me 50 cents for the day to spend at the concession stand. I would spend so much time staring at my options: Lemonheads, Turkish Taffy, Jawbreakers, Baseball Bubblegum Balls, etc. I would point to what I wanted as I was too shy to speak. They would had over my selections and I would put my 50 cents on the counter trusting that they would give me the correct change. I would stuff my treats in my pockets and go running off to sit under the large Willow Tree and enjoy my summertime candy." - Shannon C., Downers Grove, IL
"I used to love getting the gum that came with the Garbage Pail Kids cards. You would collect the cards, and eat the candy. You thought you had it so good, because you got a two fer one!!!" - Ronnie P., Prattville, AL
"One of my favorite candy memories is the whole gang of neigborhood kids would walk together to the store to buy candy. We would then all sit down, and exchange pieces so that we all had a great assortment! Wax lips, Now n Laters, Pop Rocks, Bubble Yum, the wax soda bottles with liquid, Candy Cigarettes...you name it!" - Kathy S., Lutz, FL
