Retro Candy Memories – Mary Janes
"I remember penny candy that was a penny. You could get a whole bag for not much money like Mary Janes, Kits, Pixy Stix, Smarties, Wax Bottles, Candy Buttons, Bit of Honey. All kinds of little sugary pieces. Loved them." - Laurel W., Follansbee, WV
"Every week I loved going to the corner store that amazingly had something called "penny candy." We usually ended up there for what seemed like hours, because there were so many yummy kinds to pick from. Especially loved the candy necklaces, Mary Janes, candy dots. Everytime I see them in a store I instantly think back to that great time when all you had to worry about was what to wear for that day. Memories like that are sometimes what gets you thru the reality of today." - Mary H., Ashtabula, OH
Lynn S., of Swan Lake, NY remembers: "When I was no older than ten, I would walk to the store with my sister to buy cigarettes for my grandmother. We would each be given a quarter to spend on penny candy; turkish taffy, squirrel mints, mary janes and cannon balls were my favorites! Most were two for a penny and we would come away with a good supply of candy and a pack of cigarettes."
Lisa G. of Goshen, IL remembers: "Loved it when I could buy penny candy as a kid. Getting 50 cents allowance would buy me a lot of Mary Janes and Bit-O-Honey. Oh those were the days."
