History of the C. Howard Company

In the early 1930s, Charles Howard, an Armenian immigrant, started the company, C. Howard, in a loft on lower Broadway in New York City. His goal was to make violet flavored candy tablets. Floral flavored candies were popular in Europe, but were not yet commercially made in the United States.

Howard was successful in producing a square candy with a distinct violet floral aroma and taste reminiscent of the edible candied flowers from his childhood. These candies are referred to as “mints” which refers to the size of the candy, not the flavor of the candy. Violets come packaged with 15 mints to a pack.

Early on in the start of the business, Howard sold the violet flavored mints on the street corners of New York City, rapidly growing his reputation. Soon the business grew enough where he could hire workers to hand pack the violet flavored mints into foil covered packages.

In the late 1930s, an employee named Elizabeth Juhase, was instrumental in helping Howard grow his business. She was a key person in the sales office, and managed the other employees, some of who included her sisters who were also employees at C. Howard Company. Soon the success of the business warranted a move to a larger location on 5th Avenue.

Howard died in 1969, and having no family, he left the business to his devoted employee Elizabeth Juhase who at that time was 60 years old.

C. Howard expanded their candy line to include Choward's Peppermints, Spearmints, and Lemon Mints, and a purple colored gum called C Howard's Scented Gum. The gum comes 8 pieces to a pack and boasts on the packaging, “Fragrance that refreshes after eating, smoking or drinking”. Eventually the company moved to Long Island, New York, to a town called Bellport, where they are still located today.

After 50 years in the candy business, Elizabeth died in 1985, leaving the company to her three nephews: Kenneth, Arthur, and Gene Pratz who run it today as a family business. C. Howard Company continues to make a steady supply of the nostalgic line of fragrant mints for us all to enjoy!
