Retro Candy Memories
Chamille K. of Garland, TX remembers: "When I was younger, growing up with a family of 7 was difficult. I had 5 siblings. My younger sister Loren and I were best friends. Whenever we got our weekly allowance of a quarter, we would walk down to the gas station on the corner and buy our family a piece of candy to split. We got a new kind every visit. I loved seeing their smiles when they ate the candy we bought for them:) Loren has passed away now, and hopefully now you all know my favorite memories with her."
"One of my fondest childhood memories about candy goes back to when I was 7 yrs. old. My family was raised in the mountains and valleys of southern Kentucky. My grandfather owned and operated an old fashioned country store until he was 97 yrs. old. We would travel to visit my grandparents 4 or 5 times a year. As soon as I could after arriving, I would make a beeline to the country store, a small one room store. Inside I knew there was candy I craved, which was the "old-time" hard spiral striped stick candy. My grandfather would make his way from the front porch swing of the house down to the store and unlock it. He would question me the whole time as to whether I had been a good boy and was obeying my parents. That was the stipulation as to whether he would give me candy. There were always three large jars containing an assortment of hard candy and I got to choose! What a treat!" - Ron C., Fairfield, OH
